Verizon has always gone above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to serving their wireless customers, and this latest move on their part is no exception. Verizon has decided to make it easy for just about everyone to access the internet no matter what. How are they doing this? They’ve decided to provide free internet to nearly all of their broadband customers. Apparently they figure that if you’re paying for the service you might as well be able to use it anywhere, which is fairly sound logic.
This doesn’t include everyone however; if you are using the cheapest DSL or FiOS, you won’t be included in this offer. But don’t worry, this isn’t the only drawback that it has, in fact the next one is actually quite a doosey.
In order to access this free internet you need a computer that runs either Windows XP or Vista. For most people this won’t be a problem, but you really don’t want to be that one guy with a Mac that can’t get online because you can’t run the software. In order to gain access to this service from Verizon you need to install a software package that they send you, which will be able to access the hotspots that Verizon has set up. They’ve bought some access from Boingo Wireless and they’re using it to the best of their ability. There is also AT&T, who operates a large chunk of the hotspots all over the United States.
You can find these hotspots at all kinds of public places. You may find the at restaurants, airports, bus stations, and just about any other public places. Verizon has ensured that everyone will have connectivity regardless of where they are, which is a lot more than many other companies have been able to offer in the past.
Some people might not think this is absolutely necessary, but what if you’re late for work and you need to upload a presentation immediately? What if you need to check your e-mail while you’re on the go? Yes, your cellular phone can probably do that quite nicely but you have to admit that there’s nothing like putting your hands on a keyboard and surfing the web in a public place. This is pretty amazing and it’s yet another step toward the future.
This isn’t a new idea when you consider that a lot of the current major cities offer free Wi-Fi already, but you have to ask yourself how reliable and secure that Wi-Fi actually is. The answer would be that it’s not very secure, of course. So this service that Verizon is offering is actually a great deal. So if you’re a current Verizon customer and you qualify then it couldn’t hurt to call them and inquire, and if you’re not a Verizon customer then this might be a good reason to sign up with them. Go ahead and try it out, you know you want to!
