Does anyone remember the origin of the cellular phone? Believe it or not, it was the size of a briefcase and weighed about thirty pounds. In those days this was considered a huge achievement, but now cellular phones are much smaller and they boast many more features. The closest thing to compare a cellular phone to now is the communicators from the original Star Trek.
Things have changed. Whether they have changed for better or for worse is a matter of opinion, but know that they have definitely changed. How have they changed? Take a look at the services being offered by cellular phone companies. We’ll look at Verizon for example. Verizon has stated many times that wireless is the future, and rather than attracting cellular phone customers, they have turned their attention to the delivery of data.
Verizon has long offered wireless broadband, but recently it has taken a leap forward. With about ninety three million customers, it is no surprise that Verizon has turned its eye toward the data business and prepared to deliver data and entertainment like no company before it. With its brand new wireless 4G network, they will be able to lead the revolution.
Internet access and communications however are only a small part of Verizon’s plans. The company plans to deliver web based applications, which is actually known as cloud computing. Rather than having local applications, users will be able to access their applications directly over the internet. This reduces application lag, and in some cases relieves the stress of a complicated installation.
Verizon has already started this process by providing its subscribers with cheap netbooks that feature internet integration. These netbooks cost somewhere around $50 as long as you already have a plan with the company. Verizon already offers a number of services that users have been taking advantage of for years.
For instance the communications giant has previously teamed up with Direct TV to provide entertainment and sports packages to those who live in rural areas. In addition to that it has been providing the Verizon FiOS service for several years, and while FiOS does have its own set of problems, it is a step ahead of AT&T and Time Warner cable, offering internet and premium channels in areas that would not have seen them otherwise.
It is quite clear that Verizon is leading the way in the wireless war, though it has sold parts of its network to various companies such as Frontier. On the brighter side, Verizon did acquire Alltell in 2008, expanding its influence even further. There are other implications to these developments however, and they go far beyond internet service.
As you can imagine, this wireless integration in our society will pave the way for many new jobs. Verizon has opened a new regional headquarters on the former Alltel campus, hiring about 2,400 workers. It plans to add 100 more in the next year, and the same will be happening across the country.
With Verizon moving forward, we are finally finding ourselves in an age where the internet is widely available and a viable resource for everyone to take advantage of. For the first time, cloud computing is actually an option! Though there are some people still resisting the development of the internet, many people have embraced it, and there are many who simply cannot live without it.
Though the options right now are fairly limited, it is clear that Verizon has huge plans, and those plans will take us farther into the future than we ever though possible. Some of those plans include business, healthcare, and even schools as they connect us in ways we never thought possible. Make sure you keep checking with Verizon to see what they are currently offering. You never know when they might come out with some new feature or product that will fill the gap in your life.
