What would you do if your computer were to quit working? Would you lose important documents and family photos? Do you have these important documents backed up somewhere else? Or would they just be gone?

Computers can be very unpredictable. You never know when a virus or Trojan could wipe out your hard drive. Something like a power surge could destroy your valuable information. Instead of worrying about what would happen if you lose your data, start backing it up on a regular basis.

There are several options for backing up your personal data. It doesn’t matter which method you use as long as you are backing the data up frequently.

The first method of backing up your computer’s data is to burn the data off on a CD or DVD. This will give you a way of keeping your data should something happen to your computer. The CD or DVD will last you a long time as long as they are protected from scratches. It is a good idea to keep them in protective cases.

The next method of backing up your data would consist of an external hard drive. This is a drive that is separate from your internal hard drive. They usually plug in by USB. There is still the risk of losing your data if the external drive would be hit with a power surge or virus. I would recommend having a drive that is not connected to the computer unless you are backing up your data.

There are several online websites that offer data backup storage. You can upload your data to the site and it is stored safely. Some sites charge a fee for this service. The fee varies by the amount of storage space you are allotted.

I would suggest you backing up your data on a regular schedule. If you add new files that are important back them up right away. You never know when something could happen to your computer.
